The Hyundai Ioniq 5 cleaned up at the World Car of the Year Awards announced last week at the New York International Auto Show.
The South Korean EV scooped the overall title, as well as being named World Electric Vehicle of the Year and World Car Design of the Year award winner.
On top of that, Luc Donckerwolke, executive vice president and chief creative officer of the Hyundai Motor Group, was named World Car Person of the Year (as in 'person working with cars' - he's not a Transformer).
The awards are sponsored by brake maker Brembo and the winners in other categories were the Audi e-tron GT (performance car category), Toyota Yaris Cross (urban car), and Mercedes-Benz EQS (luxury car).
The awards are voted in a secret ballot by a panel of 102 motoring journalists from 33 countries, and audited by KPMG.
Vehicles eligible for the awards must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units a year, must be priced below the luxury-car level in their primary markets.
They must be available for sale in at least two of the major markets, namely China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, and the United States, on at least two separate continents within the period January 1, 2021, to March 30, 2022.
