Sage has partnered with the Technological University of Shannon (TUS) in Athlone to provide an interactive e-learning portal for the university's accounting students as part of a multi-year deal.

The company, which provides accounting, financial, HR and payroll technology for SMEs, said the agreement would help to provide students with real-world entrepreneurial and business skills, and a full qualification supported by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

The collaboration is also the first in which Sage Business Cloud software will be deployed by an Irish university using the Sage Data Automarker, which enables students to easily submit data for automatic assessment and immediate feedback.

"Sage Ireland is proud to launch this new programme that will equip accounting and finance students with the skills that meet industry demands. Being supported by ACCA -- a trusted global industry body -- means the training programme is validated by experts," said Barry Murphy, managing director of Sage Ireland.

“We developed this qualification following research and feedback from thousands of accountants over the last 10 years. Its comprehensive and interactive training uses real-life scenarios and anonymised financial data that allows for richer decision-making, insightful learning and a deeper understanding of the role accountants play.”

Caitriona Allis, head of ACCA Ireland, added: "ACCA recognises that software and technology is changing the role of the modern accountant. This new course will support students by providing them with crucial digital and financial learning materials for today’s job market.

Tao Cui and Thomas J O'Donoghue, accounting lecturers at TUS, said they were "excited and proud" to start the collaboration and "support TUS students in ensuring they develop the practical skills and understanding to set them on the right path to become successful accountancy professionals.”

"We are delighted to partner with Sage for this new initiative. The skills we will nurture will perfectly complement the professional body accreditations already offered by the BA (Hons) in Accounting degree.

“These additional certifications will ensure students are on the best possible trajectory for educational and professional development. We look forward to seeing our students’ capabilities grow and forging their future careers in the accounting profession."
