Ryanair and Austrian oil and gas company OMV have agreed a memorandum of understanding to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Ryanair airports in Germany, Austria and Romania over the next eight years.

The agreement will see Ryanair purchase up to 160,000 tonnes (53 million gallons) of the fuel, which is manufactured from feedstocks such as used cooking oil or business waste like packaging or textiles.

SAF can emit up to 80% less carbon emissions than regular aviation fuel, and Ryanair says that the deal with OMV will see them save up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of 25,000 flights from Dublin to Vienna.

The move sees progress towards Ryanair’s 12.5% target for SAF fuel by 2030, the airline said.

Ryanair’s Director of Sustainability Thomas Fowler commented: "OMV is a key partner for Ryanair in Austria, Germany and Romania and we look forward to growing this partnership as Europe’s largest airline group.”

OMV's Nina Marczell stated: “We are committed to reducing our own carbon footprint as well as supporting our customers in reducing theirs. This agreement is a great opportunity to accelerate both companies' sustainability efforts."

OMV, with revenue of €35.5bn in 2021, operates three refineries in Europe and holds a strong market position in the areas where its refineries are located. In the Middle East, it owns 15% of ADNOC Refining and ADNOC Global Trading. The processing capacity of its refineries is 500,000 barrels of oil per day.
