Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has unveiled its new mixed-reality headset, the Meta Quest Pro.
Teased for the past year as ‘Project Cambria’, the Quest Pro is Meta’s first full colour mixed reality offering.
It features pancake lenses that fold light over multiple times, which sharpens visuals while reducing size.
The Quest Pro also features high-resolution outward-facing cameras which capture four times as many pixels as its predecessor, while it also integrates inward-facing sensors to record facial expressions and eye tracking.
Announced at Meta’s Connect 2022 conference, the device comes with 12GB of RAM and 126GB of storage, but only allows 1-2 hours of use between charges, and chalks in at a pricey €1,799.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: “It’s made for collaboration and creativity, and with mixed reality built in, it lets you do things that haven’t been possible before.
“All in a beautiful design that’s comfortable to wear. Whether you’re looking to work in a new way, or you just want the very best experiences available today, this sets the standard.”
Due to its price tag and the emphasis on collaboration, the new headset is primarily geared towards corporates.
Meta has agreed a partnership with Microsoft that will see some of the firm’s products available on Meta Quest, such as Teams and VR versions of Microsoft apps such as Word and Excel.
The company has also announced a partnership with Accenture that aims to help integrate the Metaverse into business activities.
Accenture deployed 60,000 Meta Quest 2 headsets in its US operations over the past year.
