Research by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has found that four out of ten consumers plan on purchasing during the Black Friday sales, with an average Black Friday spend estimated at €400.

Four out of five online shoppers plan on researching the advertised discount of the item before purchasing, with research intent highest among the 45+ age group (87%) and lowest among the 15-24 age group (69%).

Half of intending Black Friday shoppers have an electronics focus, with an average expected spend of €500.

Laptop or tablet devices stand out as the most popular electrical items that consumers intend to buy (37%), followed by mobile phones (26%) and televisions (22%).

Clothing, footwear and jewellery are the next most sought-after items (35%) with just over half of under 25-year olds planning these purchases, according to the CCPC data.

The CCPC survey consisted of 1,029 computer assisted telephone interviews undertaken in the first two weeks of October.

Of consumers intending to buy in the sales, half the respondents stated that they do not trust the accuracy of the discount information provided. Trust levels are highest among young people (15 -24 years) while those aged over 55 report the lowest levels of trust in discounts.

The research found that for two-thirds of shoppers the price of the item would be the most important factor, with one in four saying that the discount is the most important factor.

Grainne Griffin, CCPC director of communications, commented: “Our advice to consumers who are planning on purchasing is that they have stronger consumer rights when they buy from an EU website, and that a ‘.ie’ domain is not a guarantee that a company is based in Ireland.
