Vodafone has introduced 4G calling to its mobile network, allowing customers with suitable handsets to make calls faster and with higher definition voice quality.
The faster 4G network has been used solely for data until now, but according to the company its 4G calling product VoLTE is integrated into the phone as a native dialler — no need to use an additional app — to make a call.
“In addition, customers making a voice call and using data at the same time now will benefit by staying on the 4G network for both,” the company said.
The mobile provider has also introduced WiFi calling on selected handsets, styled as VoWiFi, so that a WiFi connection can be used to make calls.
Vodafone emphasises that both VoLTE and WiFi calling are seamless - the system hands a call over to the 2G/3G mobile network if the WiFi or 4G signal fades.
Chief technology officer Didier Clavero (pictured) commented: “Since entering the Irish market 15 years ago, Vodafone has been the single biggest investor in new technology in the Irish telecoms industry, with over €2 billion invested in building and maintaining the network. Today we continue that commitment by delivering an enhanced customer experience through the launch of additional innovative solutions."
Clavero added that Vodafone is extending its live 5G network test-bed coverage in the Dublin Docklands. The company will more than double the 5G footprint currently available as it prepares for increased demand from businesses looking to test 5G technology in the Docklands area.
He said the coverage extension allows for more businesses to trial 5G products prior to launch in the general marketplace, as Vodafone prepares to launch its 5G network at some stage in the future.
VoLTE and VoWiFi are available on Samsung S10 and S10e handsets. The company lists handsets which can use the new facilities on its website here, and will update the list as more become available.
