Fresh real bread straight from the oven, together with a range of fresh pastries, are on offer daily at the newly-opened Marmalade Bakery on Middle Street in Galway.

The ‘neighbourhood bakery’ has two daily bakes to ensure that the freshest loaves are available throughout the day. And founder Michelle Crehan-Kavanagh says it’s also to give the people of Galway “an opportunity to time their bread pick-up so they can take it home straight from the oven”.

Crehan-Kavanagh also owns and runs The Kitchen restaurant and café.

“The inspiration for Marmalade came from travelling in Europe. In each city and town I was in, I always found myself on the hunt for that little corner bakery where you find all the locals and the best food,” she says. I wanted to bring this concept back with me to Galway and I’m delighted to officially open our doors to the public.”

The bakery produces organic sourdoughs, traditional brown bread made with buttermilk, plus a variety of focaccias. It also serves freshly-baked pastries, a ‘grab-on-the-go’ takeaway breakfast and lunch offering, and freshly-roasted Red Eye coffee from the coffee bar.

The breakfast menu includes cinnamon buns; marmalade buns; plain sugar scones; berry and vanilla scones; sausage rolls; and homemade granola pots, together with the bakery’s signature sourdough slice, served with Toonsbridge ricotta, honey and sweet dukkah; butter and house marmalade; or totally nutz butter and banana.

For lunch there are savoury tarts, pies, and pastries with seasonal fillings made daily, such as veggie pastry with feta, roasted carrot smash, house pickles and rocket and lamb kofta pies. Vegan options are also available.

Even dogs are catered for. There’s a hitching rail for your pet just outside, and Marmalade bakes its own ‘doggy treats’ to keep them happy as you sip or buy.

Marmalade Bakery is at 3 Middle Street in Galway, right next to Fat Tony's Barber Shop, and opens from 8.30am to 4.00pm on weekdays.
