Tara Campbell is appointed as Head of RTÉ Radio 1

Tara Campbell has been appointed as Head of RTÉ Radio 1.

In a statement the national broadcaster said the appointment had been made following a public competition.

"In this strategically important role Tara will have overall responsibility for the editorial leadership and programming of RTÉ Radio 1 and will play a critical role in the delivery of RTÉ's five-year strategy, 2025 - 2029," RTÉ said.

Ms Campbell, from Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan has been Managing Editor of the station for the past five years.

She started her career in RTÉ as a freelance continuity announcer on Radio One before becoming a producer on Today with Sean O'Rourke.

RTÉ's Director of Audio, Patricia Monahan said: "RTÉ Radio 1 plays a significant role in Ireland and is an important part of RTÉs overall portfolio. I look forward to working with Tara to develop our output so that RTÉ Radio 1 continues to be the leading choice for audiences for many generations to come.

"Tara brings a wealth of editorial and leadership experience to this role, and I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate her on her appointment."
