Edward S. Walsh has been confirmed as the new US Ambassador to Ireland.
The US Senate approved Walsh's appointment by a majority of 57 to 38 in a vote on Wednesday evening, with five Democrats votings with Republicans on the matter and five Senators abstaining.
"Congratulations to Edward S. Walsh on his U.S. Senate confirmation as our next Ambassador to Ireland," the US Embassy Dublin wrote on LinkedIn.
"We look forward to giving Ambassador-Designate Walsh a céad míle fáilte to Ireland and working with him to strengthen the bonds between our two countries."
US President Donald Trump nominated Walsh, the founder of New Jersey-based construction and project management firm Walsh Company, for the role in December.
At the time, Trump described Walsh on Truth Social as a great philanthropist in his local community who had served as Chairman of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority Board.
The retired engineer is believed to have a home at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, and Trump described him as a "champion golfer," which he said was a "very good asset" for the Ambassador to Ireland to have.

Walsh replaces Claire Cronin whose term as US Ambassador to Ireland ended when Trump was inaugurated in January.
