Katie Taylor sealed a legacy-defining victory over long-time rival Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden in the early hours of Saturday morning, retaining her world light-welterweight title belts and putting any doubts about her previous bouts with Serrano to bed.
The Bray fighter outboxed Serrano over 10 rounds, remaining poised and controlled to secure a majority decision on the judges' scorecards (97-93, 97-93, 95-95) and win what is likely to be the final fight in her trilogy with Serrano after two contested victories.
Taylor had tears in her eyes in the ring at the end of the fight, which took place before nearly 20,000 fans at Manhattan's iconic area.
Afterwards, she said she was "very satisfied" with her evening's work.
“I think I made the fight a lot easier for myself tonight,” Taylor said. “I knew I was capable of that kind of performance. In the first two fights, I just got caught up in a bit of a war with her.
"This time, the game plan was to constantly move and not let her feet set, and I was able to do that. It was a very smart, clever performance. That’s what I’m most proud of.”
Taylor and Serrano made history in 2022 when they became the first female boxers to headline at Madison Square Garden, and they fought on the undercard of the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, last November.
Like that fight, Taylor-Serrano 3 was streamed globally on Netflix, which has over 300 million subscribers worldwide.
This time, the pair topped an all-female card, which Taylor described as "an absolute privilege".
“These are the sort of opportunities people didn’t think were even possible a few years ago,” she said.
“The atmosphere was absolutely electric again tonight. I didn’t think it could get any louder than the first time we were here, but tonight it was just unbelievable.
"I’m very, very proud to have headlined such an important event for women’s sports.”
The 39-year-old was coy about her plans for the future. When asked if she would continue to fight, Taylor would only offer that she was sure she didn't want to fight Serrano again.
"I have a huge ton of respect for Amanda, she's such a warrior. It's a pleasure to share a ring with her," she added. "We have made history three times. We are history makers forever."
Taylor and Serrano split an $18 million purse on the night, the biggest purse in the history of women's boxing, and the fight is expected to significantly bolster the 2012 Olympic champion's net worth.
It is understood Taylor is worth around €10m, having pocketed around $6m (€5.1m) for the second Serrano fight in Texas last November.
She is believed to have earned $2m for the first fight in the trilogy.

The latest accounts for Taylor's Irish-registered company, KT Sports Ltd, show losses of €48,300 and €45,800 over the past two years, bringing net assets down to slightly more than €1.5m.
The company lists around €758,300 in investment property assets and cash reserves of €663,600.
The company directors, Taylor and sister Sarah Taylor, were paid €52,100 for the year.
