Live Register numbers 0.3% decline in August

The seasonally adjusted Live Register total declined by 500 or 0.3% in August.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has said there were 168,600 people on the Live Register last month, down from 167,100 in July.

Unadjusted, the total stood at 177,600, of whom 53.8% were male and 72.3% were Irish. The number of people on the Live Register has declined by 268 over the past year.

The 25-34 age group made up the largest group of people on the Live Register at 43,214 or 24.3% of the total, ahead of the 35-44 cohort at 40,120 or 22.6%.

Peopled aged 45-54 represented the third-largest group at 35,184 or 19.8% while there were 22,746 people aged 25 and under (12.8%).

With 115,059 claimants, Jobseeker's Allowance recipients made up the majority of people on the Live Register, with Jobseeker's Benefit (27,171) and Jobseeker's Pay Related Benefit (25,193) claimants making up a further 52,300 between them.

Over the past 12 months, Dublin (+7.7%) and Kildare (+5.5) were the counties that recorded the largest increases in Live Register numbers, with Kerry (-12.1%) and Donegal (-8%) posting the biggest decreases.

In August, there were 121,518 people on the Live Register for less than one year, which was 5,862 more people (+5.1%) than in August 2024.

The number of persons on the Live Register for one year or more in August 2025 was 56,082, down 6,130 (-9.9%) from a year earlier.

There were 30,769 persons availing of activation programmes in July 2025, representing a decrease of 910 persons (-2.9%) from the previous year.

And there were 12,192 Ukrainian refugees benefitting from the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive included in the figures, 63.6% of whom were female and 88.4% of whom were over 25.
