The price of fuel fallen 10.5% on average in the past month, and the price of diesel specifically has dropped to its lowest level since the war in Ukraine began in February, according to the latest AA Ireland fuel survey.
Diesel prices declined 11.3% or 22 cents per litre month-on-month to an average of €1.74, and the price of petrol decreased 9.8% or 17 centres per litre to €1.60, the lowest average price for petrol since September last year.
“These latest price reductions come at a good time for motorists, hauliers and commercial operators alike," said Paddy Comyn, AA Ireland’s head of communications.
"There is no firm indication on how long these prices will last, but for now, they give consumers some slight respite against ever-increasing prices.”
The AA calculates that a diesel car will travel, on average, around 850km on a tank compared to 700km for a petrol vehicle, which is why consumers will likely use less of it for the same average 17,000km per year despite the higher price.
Fuel prices spiked in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and remained elevated for several months before finally declining in November.
