Gemini has launched its cryptocurrency exchange and custody services in Ireland.

The platform enables individuals and institutions to buy over 100 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ether, USD Coin etc.

Customers can now open an account via the Gemini website or mobile application and buy cryptocurrencies in euros and pound sterling.

Users can make purchases with their debit card or using Apple Pay or Google Pay, and can fund their account via SEPA transfer.

Gemini said that financial institutions, fintechs and corporations can use Gemini’s platform to access custody, clearing, trade execution, price discovery and portfolio construction services.

Gemini’s launch follows approval for registration by the Central Bank of Ireland.

Gemini is the first company to receive the Virtual Asset Service Provider registration, which followed its authorisation as an Electronic Money Institution by the Central Bank in March 2022.

Gillian Lynch, Head of Ireland and Europe at Gemini, said: “Gemini is committed to providing consumers and institutions with a secure entry point into crypto. We’re excited to be live in Ireland, where there is strong demand among a highly educated and tech-literate consumer base for accessible crypto services in euros."

Gemini was founded in the United States in 2014 by twin brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and is now operational in 65 countries.

The Winklevoss duo famously fell out with Mark Zuckerberg over who really founded Facebook.

Gemini has been in retrenchment mode recently, and announced in June that it was laying off about 10% of its employees, citing “turbulent market conditions that are likely to persist for some time”.

The Gemini site lists scores of cryptos that people can buy into. Many can be acquired for a few cents, but not the market leaders.

The current entry point to buy into market leader Bitcoin, with a market cap of $366bn, is $19,105.

Ether, with a market cap of $159bn, has an entry point of $1,296.
