ESB to recruit 1,000 to assist decarbonisation efforts

ESB will recruit 1,000 people, including 300 graduates, over the next three years as part of efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, with engineering, IT, finance, procurement, customer service, HR, apprenticeship and electrician positions to be filled.

The state-owned electricity company has committed to producing net-zero emissions by 2040 under its Driven to Make a Difference: Net Zero by 2040 strategy, and it has set a 2030 target of generating 5,000MW of renewable electricity to show its on track with its decarbonisation plan.

ESB will seek to hire cyber specialists, data scientists, AI, digital and cloud specialists, and project managers for its IT division as well as offshore wind, renewables, network planning, asset development, environmental, civil, electrical and mechanical engineers.

The company will also hire marine biologists and geologists, geotechnical professionals and hydrology scientists as well as procurement specialists, financial accountants, commercial analysts, trading professionals, HR managers and customer service representatives.

It will also recruit graduates and trainees for its graduate development programme commencing in September and the ESB Networks apprentice programme, and apprentices in finance, IT, HR, engineering and commercial.

ESB employs 8,000 across its various arms, including ESB Networks and Electric Ireland, and the announcement follows notice of ESB's apprentice recruitment campaign, which will be open to 96 electrical apprentices later this year.

Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan welcomed the announcement, saying it had been made at "a critical time for Ireland’s energy landscape."

"Together with the 8,000 people already employed at the organisation, these new recruits will play a key role in creating a clean energy future for us all," he added.
