Labelling and packaging supplier Multi-Colour Corporation (MCC) Castlebar has announced 30 "high-quality" new jobs and investment of €4m in its Co Mayo site.
MCC employs over 13,000 people at 102 sites in 26 countries, and MCC Castlebar is one of three sites in Ireland that employ almost 300 people and active recruitment for the new positions, which are mainly connected to the acquisition of digital technology, is underway.
"This is great news from MCC, investing €4m in the Castlebar site, creating 30 new jobs for the local area. This money will go towards preparing for the future, investing in increasing capacity and new technology," Varadkar said.
"I wish the team all the very best with this expansion – it’s exactly the kind of thing we are trying to bring about with our regional enterprise plans."
MCC Castlebar, which previously traded as Cashing Print before it was taken over by MCC in 2016, derives 97% of its business from printing for the healthcare industry, and it is the preferred suppliers for multinationals in the pharmaceutical and medical device sector.
Its main products are multiple formats for instructions for use (IFU), including folded inserts, outserts, patient information pads, log books and bound booklets.
John Fennessy, general manager of MCC Castlebar, said: "This is a proud day for the entire team at MCC Castlebar and we are honoured to have the Tánaiste here to celebrate our jobs and investment announcements with us.
"I would like to acknowledge the support of Enterprise Ireland in helping to develop our business expansion into additional markets. I also want to pay tribute to our managers and the whole team. We have made huge strides over the last five years and look forward confidently to a bright future.”
Also speaking at the event, Stephen Creaner, executive director of Enterprise Ireland, said: "Enterprise Ireland is proud to support MCC Castlebar as it implements its ambitious growth strategy.
"The company has made a great contribution to the economy of the region and the addition of another 30 high-quality jobs that will flow from its significant investment in its Castlebar facility is good news for Mayo and the western region.
"Enterprise Ireland supports the continued expansion of MCC Castlebar’s export footprint in new and existing markets and we look forward to continuing our positive relationship with this excellent company.”
The MCC announcement comes as the government its West Regional Enterprise Plan for Galway, Mayo and Roscommon, one of nine such enterprise plans covering every part of the country created as part of a €180m investment to boost regional development. Varadkar also welcomed the announcement of new jobs at Analog Devices Inc on Friday.
"The Government is committed to balanced regional development, meaning we are constantly looking at ways to bring jobs and prosperity to every part of the country," Varadkar said. "We’ve developed nine, region-specific plans, which will each look at how best to drive investment and create long-term, sustainable jobs in each of the areas they cover.
“It’s great to be in Mayo today to launch the plan for the West. Galway, Mayo and Roscommon have so much to offer. This plan, which has been developed by the local community, will look at how we can strengthen and grow existing industries, such as life sciences, AgTech and food and of course the cultural and creative sector and realise the potential of new, developing industries, such as renewable energy."
Varadkar went onto say that he believes the west can become a "renewable energy powerhouse" to fulfil the country's electricity needs and that the investment will help Ireland to reach his target of 2.5m people in employment.
