Donohoe to open Blockchain Ireland Week 2022

Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and a range of figures from enterprise, media, academia, public service and the start-up community will appear at Blockchain Ireland Week 2022, taking place later this month.

Minister Donohoe will open the free programme of events taking place at the Alex Hotel in central Dublin from 9am on Monday, 30 May, with the likes of government CIO Barry Lowry, Stripe EMEA head of payments Sean Mullaney, musician Mick Flannery, actor Peter Coonan, artist Maser, and more.

The event will take a look at present opportunities and future developments in blockchain, crypto and Web3, and panel discussions will focus on topics such as finding work in crypto, building a talent pipeline, developing legal and regulatory frameworks, and the impact of NFTs in the arts and fashion.

In addition to the formal programme and curated events taking place around the country, there will also be an evening social with awards for the sector and an NFT competition with cash prizes.

Blockchain Ireland Week is run by Blockchain Ireland, the industry network for the promotion and understanding of blockchain, crypto and Web 3 in Ireland, with more than 1,400 active members and working groups around enterprise, start-ups, developers and other topics.

Despite estimated billions being wiped off cryptocurrency markets following the collapse of the Terra and Luna coins last week, the market for blockchain, online ledgers that can be used to securely record crypto transactions, is projected to grow to $67.4bn by 2026.

Blockchain Ireland said the technologies are "reshaping businesses across the globe, and the associated innovation is outpacing existing business models, ecosystems, policy and legislation. 

"Blockchain Ireland Week 2022, from 30 May, will explore the developing role of blockchain, crypto, and Web3 in Ireland and globally, examining their value, understanding their impact, and asking how Ireland can take full advantage. 

"By 2030, blockchain is expected to be a foundational technology for 30% of customers globally, according to a Gartner report. As the business world moves towards holding and trading more digital assets, Deloitte reports intent to adopt among more than three quarters (76%) of executives within the decade.

"Blockchain, crypto, and Web3 are predicted to become a critical enabling technology layer, not just for enterprise, but for organisations of all shapes and sizes, in sectors such as in finance, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, government, and beyond."

Blockchain Ireland Week 2022 takes place between Monday, 30 May and Tuesday, 1 June.
