The Revenue Commissioners have extended the deadline for claims under the Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme (TBESS) which relate to the September 2022 claim period.
Tuesday 31 January was to be the final day to claim the TBESS for September 2022.
TBESS entitles companies to claim back 40% of the increase in their electricity or gas bills, up to a maximum of €10,000 per month.
Until the last-minute change, any firm with a claim for September 2022 had to have the claim submitted by the 31 January 2023 deadline.
Claimants require details of their electricity and gas bills to complete the process. Guidance from Revenue is available here.
Finance minister Michael McGrath (pictured) stated: “Following careful consideration, the Revenue Commissioners have announced the extension of this deadline. This move will enable businesses to make a claim under TBESS in February for September 2022.
"I welcome the decision taken by Revenue. It is important that we give businesses adequate opportunity to submit their claims under the scheme. The government will make a decision in the coming weeks on the future of the TBESS scheme along with all the other cost of living measures that are due to expire at the end of February.”
Department of Finance data shows that as of 25 January, 15,275 businesses have registered for the scheme.
9,150 of these have commenced the claim process and 5,790 claims have been approved with a value of €17.5m, of which €13.2m has been paid out.
A business can make a claim under the scheme if it is tax compliant, carries on a Case I trade or Case II profession, and has experienced a significant increase of 50% or more in its electricity and/or natural gas average unit price.
The scheme runs from 1 September 2022 to 28 February 2023. Claims may be made in respect of each calendar month (referred to as a ‘claim period’) within this time frame.
The level of TBESS claims is far below government expectations.
