Technologist and machine learning export Michelle Concannon has been appointed senior vice president of engineering at US medtech company Signify Health, which recently opened its first base outside America in Galway.

Concannon will lead the tech engineering teams in Ireland and the US, which are responsible for developing and applying technology to solve diagnostic and cost problems in the American healthcare system while shifting services towards the home.

Concannon joins Signify Health from Microsoft and will be based in her native Galway after almost a decade living in Silicon Valley and Dublin, and she has more than 20 years of experience working in Ireland, the US, EMEA and Asia.

At Microsoft, Concannon worked in global engineering, product and site leadership roles within its cloud and AI organisation over the past two years, and prior to joining the tech giant, she worked at US healthcare company Optum, Cisco and Ayava (formerly Nortel).

She holds a Bachelor's degree in computer systems from the University of Limerick and a Master's in computing from GMIT, now Atlantic Technological University, as well as a Nanodegree in machine learning.

Elaine Murphy was recently appointed Galway site lead at Signify Health.

"We are delighted to welcome Michelle to Signify Health and are sure her wealth of technology and machine learning experience – especially in the healthcare sector -- will help us achieve our goal of building the next generation healthcare ecosystem," said Josh Builder, chief information officer at Signify Helath.

"Michelle and Elaine will head up a diverse team of professionals who will challenge the status quo and help us use new technology platforms for a new age of healthcare.”

Concannon herself said: "I’ve been fortunate enough to work in the healthcare industry for three years and, as a technology leader, I found that experience to be incredibly inspiring, while at the same time, deeply humbling.

"Being able to apply the skills you have acquired as an engineer to truly change peoples’ lives is a mission that I have found to be innately motivating. Signify Health’s ultimate purpose is to help people by changing the way US healthcare is paid for and delivered. I’m genuinely excited to work alongside Elaine, our site lead, building a team that will affect this mission."
