Surmodics Hiring 100 At Creagh Galway Plant

US medical technology firm Surmodics is to create 100 jobs in Ballinasloe, following its acquisition of Creagh Medical late last year.

Headquartered in Minnesota, Surmodics, specialises in medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics. The firm plans to invest €7m in its Ballinasloe facility, adding the 100 jobs to the 32 already there over the next five years.

Surmodics added that it will invest a further €9.5m in two R&D projects in its new Galway facility. The expansion and development is being supported by the IDA and the company will continue to be located in Creagh Medical’s existing 30,000 sq. ft. facility in Ballinasloe.

Tom Greaney, who was previously CEO of Creagh Medical, joined Surmodics as VP of global operations and general manager of the Ballinasloe operation.

Speaking after Surmodics’ announcement today, jobs minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor said: “This company is at the cutting edge of innovative life sciences research and development, and the expansion of their newly acquired facility in Ballinasloe is very welcome news and a vote of confidence in the skilled Irish workforce.”

Dungarvan Jobs

Separately, Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories announced plans to expand its operations in Dungarvan in Waterford, with the addition of over 160 staff over the next five years.

The bioanalytical testing company said that it will increase its Irish workforce to over 500 by 2021, having already added 175 jobs in the last two years.

“We invest heavily in our internal training programmes and we are grateful to be supported by the IDA and the Skillnets to deliver technical competency in our team that is world class.”
