Digit Game Studios, the Irish games developer behind the popular online multiplayer game ‘Kings of the Realm’, has raised another $2.7m from US gaming firm Scopely.

Allotment filings by Digit show that two payments of $1.33m were received earlier this month, bringing to more than $6m the amount invested by Scopely in the Dublin-based firm since 2015.

Scopely is headquartered in Los Angeles and specialises in touchscreen games for smartphones. The company was founded in 2011 and since then has built up a partner network with games development studios, among them Digit.

Scopely announced in 2015 that it had agreed a multi-million dollar, multi-game publishing deal with Digit. The Dublin business has raised significant funding to date from other sources too – a year after it was founded, it had already secured €2.7m.

Digit followed up an initial €800,000 seed round with a second round that attracted €1.9m. Both rounds were led by Delta Partners, with ACT Venture Capital also investing via the AIB Startup Accelerator Fund.

Digit was founded by Richard Barnell, Martin Frain, Fergus Duggan and David McGovern. The company’s flagship game is a strategy-type offering in the mould of Age of Empires, which can be played on multiple devices.

The company is said to be planning a new game launch this year. The most recent account filings for Digit are for 2015, when it booked a loss of €1.7m, bringing accumulated losses to €6.5m. The same year, it announced that it would triple its headcount to 60.

Kings of the Realm is available as an Android or iOS app and works on a freemium model, meaning that it is free to download but earns revenue from in-app purchases, such as weapons or other items. According to Google Play, they can range in price from €5 to €110 per item.
