Sports Website Gets €150,000 From Taxpayer

Balls Media Ltd has secured €150,000 investment from taxpayers through Enterprise Ireland. The agency previously made a payment of €25,000 in 2013, and is paying three times more per share for its shares now than in 2013.

The EI investment follows a €150,000 investment in Balls Media in December 2015 by Key Capital, owners of the Sunday Business Post newspaper. Balls Media runs two websites, Balls.ie and theSlicedPan.com, with the latter website apparently taking a rest at the moment.

Balls.ie was founded in 2010 by Newstalk presenter Ger Gilroy (pictured), Brian Reynolds and Donny Mahoney and claims 1.7 million unique users every month. According to the company website: “We have become specialists in curating viral sports content that is designed to inform and entertain in equal measure. Our work is a blend of the latest sports news and our very own original content. Right now we are busy establishing a Podcast network as part of our constant quest to further our growth and attract new users. Our hope is to expand into live video output for 2016.”

Balls Media Ltd booked a loss of €18,000 in 2014. Year-end debtors amounted to €2,000.

The Enterprise Ireland investment is unusual in that the agency does not entertain investment requests from print, visual and radio media.
