Irish engineering and environmental consultancy firm Ryan Hanley has been acquired by Stantec, the NYSE-listed sustainable design and engineering group.

Rylan Hanley, which has offices in Dublin, Galway, Cork and Castlebar, provides services to local authorities, government departments, private clients, utility companies and other organisations.

Santec said the deal is an important part of expanding its presence in Ireland, and the group expects to avail of Ryan Hanley's local knowledge, relationships and expertise, particularly in the Irish water sector.

“Through deep and meaningful collaboration, Ryan Hanley and Stantec have proven our ability to deliver outstanding results for clients and communities in Ireland,” said Gord Johnston, Stantec’s president and chief executive officer.

“Innovation and purpose are at the heart of both of our businesses, and this new chapter is the logical next step in our collective journey.

"Together, our shared capabilities, expertise, and creativity will help address some of Ireland’s biggest challenges.”

Ryan Hanley has been part of a joint venture with Stantec to support Uisce Éireann in its engineering design services framework since 2020.

The joint venture has helped to deliver €3.5bn investment in asset delivery across Uisce Éireann's platforms.

Stantec and Ryan Hanley also share office space in Dublin, and their partnership was recognised by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland at the 2025 Engineering Excellence Awards with the sustainability and natural environment award.

Ryan Hanley will be integrated into Stantec, allowing its interdisciplinary teams to reach new markets, such as energy, transport, and community development, while drawing from Stantec’s global footprint and resources.

“Over the last 90 years, we have grown to become a values-driven business, founded on passion and integrity as well as doing what is right for communities and the environment,” said Ger Gibney, managing director of Ryan Hanley.

“This will not change as Ryan Hanley becomes part of Stantec, a firm that has shown itself to be a hugely valuable partner with an ethos similar to our own.

"We are all excited for what feels like a natural stage in our evolution as we continue to grow our numbers and drive project excellence across Ireland.”

Ryan Hanley has undertaken notable consulting engineering projects in water, wastewater, flood risk management, structural engineering, environmental planning, and ecology.

They include the Coolatee Integrated Constructed Wetland in Co. Donegal, the Leixlip to Saggart Pipeline, The O'Shaughnessy Bridge to the University of Galway campus, and River Deal Flood Relief Scheme efforts in Crossmolina, Co. Mayo.

Ryan Hanley made a profit of €2m in 2023, up from €552,500 in 2022. The company employs 134 people, according to its latest available accounts

"Joining Stantec brings the successful relationship established through our joint venture to its natural next step in furthering our company's development," said Gibney.
