The weekday audience for the 9am hour on RTÉ Radio 1 under Oliver Callan is now greater than it was when Ryan Tubridy was presenting.

The latest JNLR figures show an average of 349,000 people listen to Callan in the post-Morning Ireland slot in 2024, up from 343,000 in 2023, the year Tubridy left the national broadcaster.

Oliver Callan is now the fourth-most-listened-to programme on Irish radio behind Morning Ireland (466,000), which has lost 20,000 listeners year-on-year, and the Brendan O'Connor Show on Saturday (358,000) and Sunday (366,000).

O'Connor has also grown the audience for his weekend current affairs discussions programmes since 2023, adding 23,000 listeners on Sundays and 16,000 on Saturdays.

RTÉ Radio 1 dominates the top 20 as ever, and the station noted annual increases in listenership for Liveline (+11,00 to 314,000), Ray D'Arcy (+8,000 to 194,000) and Drivetime (+5,000 to 226,000).

Business Bulletin

"This is an outstanding book for RTÉ Radio 1. Our afternoons have stabilised and are climbing again. Our music programmes are performing exceptionally as are our weekends," said Peter Woods, head of RTÉ Radio 1.

The Business added 15,000 listeners and now has an average audience of 328,00. Similarly, Sunday with Miriam (304,000) added 12,000 listeners year-on-year, and 9,000 more people on average tuned into Today with Claire Byrne (349,000).

2FM Drive (145,000) and The Laura Fox Show (131,000) have both lost around 5,000 listeners since The 2 Johnnies and Jennifer Zamparelli left the station, but 2FM Breakfast has added 6,000 listeners year-on-year despite its own presenter exodus.

"2FM has consolidated its listenership over the past three months with strong performances throughout the day," said Dan Healy, head of RTÉ 2FM.

"What a great platform and momentum we now have to build our new schedule from. With Carl Mullan, Aisling Bonnar and Roz Purcell at breakfast, Laura Fox on mornings, Tracy Clifford in the afternoon and Doireann Garrihy at drive,  2FM's weekday schedule is full of brilliant radio presenters."

Newstalk trumpeted The Pat Kenny Show as the most popular show on commercial radio with 237,000 daily listeners, up 21,000 from this time last year.

Kenny's show is one of two commercial radio programmes to feature in the top 20 alongside The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM (202,000).

Bauer Media Audio Ireland-owned Newstalk now has an 8.4% share of the national radio audience, and a weekly reach of 871,000 listeners, up 10,000 from the last survey.

Following year-on-year growth of 30,000, Newstalk's daily audience of 512,000 listeners makes it the second-most-listened-to station in the country.

Nestalk also highlighted significant annual gains for Newstalk Breakfast with Ciara Kelly and Shane Coleman (+16,000 to 165,000), Andrea Gilligan's Lunchtime Live (+21,000 to 139,000).

The Moncrieff Show (112,000)and The Hard Shoulder (150,000), however, both list listeners versus a year ago.

"Our strategy of engaging the public in the stories, discussions and conversations that count for them is really paying dividends," said Eric Moylan, managing editor of Newstalk.

Radio JNLR

"Be it a general election, a major gig, the latest parenting advice or debating how to improve work/life balance, we’re talking to our audience about the stories that matter to them.

"This set of results gives a great start point to 2025 as we look to continue the growth delivered by our hard-working teams.”
