Four Irish pubs have been named among the best in Europe, according to the European Bar Guide, writes Rebecca Fisher.

The guide reveals a list of the top 100 pubs and bars in Europe every year, advising everyone from tourists to locals on the best spots for a tipple.

The venues are ranked on five main criteria: the quality and choice of drinks, style and décor, character, atmosphere and local life, amenities and events on offer and value for money.

Coming in at number 28 on the list is Tig Bhric, a traditional pub and restaurant located in the West Kerry Gaeltacht on the Dingle Peninsula.

Family-owned, the beloved bar has been an institution since its establishment in the 1890s.

The European Bar Guide gave Tig Bhric a rating of 9.5 out of 10 and hailed the establishment as “a small West Kerry brewery with cask beer in a wonderfully cosy pub with views of the peninsula.”

Unsurprisingly, coming in as the 24th best pub in Europe is none other than Dublin stronghold, Grogan’s.

Located on South William Street, Grogan’s has been a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike for well over a century.

There has been a pub on the site of Grogan’s since 1899, but it really began gaining acclaim as a place of respite for writers since its opening in the 1970s.

Ranking among the top 20 best bars in Europe is Dick Mack’s in Dingle, which came in at number 17 on the list of Europe’s best bars.

Located on Green Street opposite the Church, Dick Mack’s was originally a bar and leather shop in 1899.

Still going strong today, the establishment owned by the MacDonnell family is renowned for their top- notch Guinness, eclectic interior and regular trad sessions.

The highest-ranked Irish pub in The European Bar Guide’s latest list is John Kavanagh’s ‘The Gravediggers’ in Dublin, which was named the 14th best bar in Europe.

The Gravediggers was founded in 1833 and has been widely lauded as the best pint of Guinness in Dublin.

According to The European Bar Guide, which gave The Gravediggers a rating of 9.6 out of 10; "spending time here is like stepping into a painting, the wash of colour and calm on a quiet afternoon as beguiling as its buzzy evening rhythm.

"Adored by the locals who know they live near one of the best pubs in Europe. Known, rightly so, for pouring a superb pint."
