Irish femtech startup Joii has officially launched its pioneering mobile app and a new range of sustainable period care products, aiming to transform how menstrual health is tracked, understood, and discussed—both in Ireland and globally.
To date, the company has raised €2.4m in funding.
At the heart of Joii’s offering is a world-first innovation: menstrual pads that, when paired with Joii’s mobile app, analyse period blood volume and clotting patterns using AI-powered image recognition.
This provides users with detailed, clinically relevant insights into their menstrual health—information that has long been missing from traditional cycle tracking.
While wearables have given data on sleep, steps, and heart health, Joii aims to break new ground in female health by offering measurable, objective information about menstruation.
By simply scanning a used Joii pad with the app, users receive immediate data on their flow and clot size—insights that are clinically valuable but often overlooked.
"For too long, people have been told to ‘track their period’ without having the tools to truly understand what’s going on,” says Joii founder, Justyna Strzeszynska.
“With Joii, we’re changing that. We’re helping people see their periods clearly—for the first time.”
Heavy menstrual bleeding affects 1 in 3 women, yet diagnosis is often delayed due to vague, subjective descriptions like “heavy” or “normal.”
Joii’s solution introduces clarity and data into this conversation—empowering users to better understand their own health and supporting clinicians with more accurate, shareable information.
Certified as a Class I Medical Device in the UK and protected by multiple patents, Joii is collaborating with leading research institutions to build predictive models for conditions like endometriosis and PCOS—harnessing menstrual blood as a powerful new diagnostic tool.
Backed by clinical research and real-world testing funded by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), Joii’s impact is already clear:
- 62% of users reported better communication with their doctors
- Symptom screening effectiveness increased by 288%
- Menstrual health literacy improved by 134%
These results underline the app’s potential, especially for those facing long diagnostic journeys—such as endometriosis, which currently takes an average of 8 to 10 years to diagnose—or for anyone looking to better manage their menstrual wellbeing.
Dr Fatema Mustansir Dawoodbhoy, NHS Clinical Advisor to Joii, says: “This app will definitely offer me better insights into how the patient is feeling, as I’ll be able to understand their symptom variation throughout the month.”
Dr Kushal Chummun, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Rotunda and Connolly Hospitals, agrees: “I think the app is really, really good.”
