Lough Eske Castle, County Donegal’s only five-star hotel, has taken a significant step forward in sustainable hospitality through a comprehensive suite of eco-conscious initiatives.

Leading the way is the castle’s full transition to renewable energy, achieved through a long-term partnership with a leading green electricity provider.

The historic estate is now powered entirely by clean, renewable energy, marking a key milestone in its ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and aligning with Ireland’s national sustainability goals.

This move to renewable power is just one part of the castle’s broader mission to embed sustainability into every aspect of its operations.

Lough Eske Castle has implemented a variety of impactful changes to enhance its energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.

Among the key upgrades is a complete transformation of the property’s lighting systems, with all fixtures now using low-energy alternatives that have dramatically lowered overall energy consumption.

To further improve energy management, Lough Eske Castle is in the process of upgrading its building management system, incorporating both software and hardware enhancements to maximise efficiency throughout the estate.

In the kitchens, the hotel has eliminated its reliance on fossil fuels by replacing gas fuel cookers with electric alternatives.

Water conservation has also been a central focus, with the installation of flow-restriction devices across the property helping to reduce usage.

In addition, new rainwater harvesting facilities now collect and repurpose rainwater for the maintenance of the hotel’s extensive gardens.

Preserving the natural environment is a core part of the Castle’s ethos, according to the hotel.

They have launched an on-site tree planting program and have joined Crann, Ireland’s national tree planting organisation, to support the restoration and protection of native woodlands.

Complementing these efforts, wildflower meadows are being cultivated across the grounds to encourage biodiversity and provide a haven for local insects and wildlife.

Further enhancing its environmental contribution, the castle has installed beehives across the estate to protect and support local pollinator populations, species vital to the health of the broader ecosystem.

Alongside these efforts, the hotel has introduced a comprehensive recycling program, designed to minimise waste and reduce its contribution to landfills, aligning with its long-term vision for a greener future.
