A major environmental milestone was marked as Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O’Brien TD joined Tony Keohane, Chair of the Board of Re-turn, and Ciaran Foley, CEO of Re-turn, to celebrate the success of Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme.

Since its launch in February 2024, the scheme has seen over 1.6 billion bottles and cans returned across the country.

This achievement also coincides with a dramatic rise in the national recycling rate for drinks containers, which has surged from 49% to 91% in just 17 months.

Ciaran Foley, CEO of Re-turn, said: "This milestone is a testament to the Irish public’s enthusiasm for making a real difference to our environment.

“In just over a year, we’ve seen a transformation in how drinks containers are managed. We are extremely proud of what has been achieved and grateful for the support from government, retailers, producers and, most importantly, the Irish people."

The Deposit Return Scheme, operated by Re-turn, encourages consumers to return empty plastic bottles and aluminium cans in exchange for a small deposit refund.

The goal is to reduce litter, increase recycling rates, and contribute to a more circular economy.

Minister Darragh O’Brien TD commended the efforts: "This is a clear example of a scheme that works. It’s delivering for our climate targets, supporting cleaner communities, and showing that with collaboration, we can make rapid progress. It’s a proud day for Ireland’s environmental journey."

Tony Keohane, Chair of the Board of Re-turn, added: "This milestone reinforces the power of collective action. It’s about doing the right thing for future generations."

The team at Re-turn says momentum will continue, with further innovations and public engagement planned to maintain and even improve these impressive recycling levels.
