Amazon has announced the release of the Kindle Scribe, their first e-reader that boasts writing and drawing capabilities.
The Scribe, coming in with a 10.2 inch, 300 ppi display, features an attached stylus that doesn’t need to be charged and aims to replicate paper in its anti-glare properties and brightness levels.
The e-reader is positioned more as a multi-purpose device than just a vehicle for reading. Amazon has emphasised the customisation capabilities for file types such as PDFs, which can be sent to and from a personal computer using cloud storage, and aims to provide an option for the growing personal journaling market.
It also aims to be an office-friendly device, with lined ‘paper’ for meeting notes, compatibility with Microsoft Word and auto-saved to-do lists. And, being a Kindle, it allows users to add handwritten notes to e-books.
“Kindle Scribe is the best Kindle we’ve ever built, creating a reading and writing experience that feels like real paper,” said Kevin Keith from Amazon.
“It's inspired by the Kindle customers who have added billions of notes and highlights to books over the years, and it’s also ideal for reviewing and marking up documents, managing your to-do list, or doodling over a big idea.”
This newest iteration of Kindle has gone for size over stealth, with its display being over 3.4 inches larger than its most recent predecessor, the Kindle Paperwhite. Also new is the possibility of a 64gb model, while the 35 LEDs in its front lights boast the brightest settings yet.
It is available for pre-order now from the Amazon website, with the 16GB model with a basic pen coming in at a retail cost of €374, with the premium pen option (with attached eraser) bringing the price point up to €408. The 32GB model is €431, while the 64GB comes in at €465. The product ships on the 30th of November.
