Strong uptake for fibre-to-the-premises broadband

Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband accounted for 33.2% of total fixed broadband subscriber lines in Q1 2023, up from 25.2% in Q1 2022.

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) said that for the first time FTTP is now the most commonly purchased broadband technology in Ireland.

Fixed broadband subscriber lines increased to 1.62m, a 0.4% increase from Q4 2022 and an increase of 1.9% compared to Q1 2022. Of these, 537k were FTTP subscriber lines.

On a monthly basis an average fixed residential broadband subscriber line used 401GB of data, an increase of 9.4% since Q1 2022.

In Q1 2023, c.59% of broadband subscriber lines had broadband with speeds equal to or greater than 100Mbps.

ComReg data shows that 34% of all fixed broadband subscriber lines have speeds equal to or greater than 500Mbps.

Of the FTTP broadband connections, 75% have sold speeds equal to or greater than 500Mbps.

ComReg’s Q1 report shows that total voice traffic minutes decreased by 2.2% in the three-month period, 6.7% lower than in Q1 2022. Mobile minutes form the majority of voice minutes at 89.5%, with fixed minutes representing the remaining 10.5%.

On a monthly basis, an average mobile voice subscriber used 185 minutes (9.3% annual decrease), sent 36 texts (10% annual decrease) and used 15.7GB of data (+18.6% annual increase).

Total mobile subscriptions (including mobile broadband and machine-to-machine (M2M)) increased to 9 million in Q1 2023, driven by a rise in post pay subscriptions which now represent 73% of all mobile subscriptions.

5G subscribers passed 1 million in Q1 totalling 1.12m, according to ComReg.

M2M subscriptions increased to 3 million, a 30% annual increase and made up 34% of all mobile subscriptions in Q1 2023.
