Ireland’s first Butterfly Meadow at Nestlé’s Wyeth nutrition infant formula site has opened an ‘Insect Lodge’ as part of its sustainability programme.
The Insect Lodge in Askeaton, Co. Limerick provides a breeding and hibernation habitat for insects, and aims to enhance local biodiversity.
Brian Shiel, Wyeth Nutritionals said: “Natural pollinator creatures of butterflies, bees and birds are integral to the food we grow. Their habitats are under threat and we’re delighted that we can play a small role in reversing this trend. By restoring the natural habitat of the area we will hopefully see an increase in indigenous species of insects and butterflies in the local Askeaton area.”

The 1,800 square metre Butterfly Meadow was launched in December 2014 to increase the number and variety of native Irish butterflies in the area.
Wyeth also plans to plant 1,900 indigenous native trees over the coming months, including Birch, Hazel, Holly and Willow. The pupils from nearby Askeaton National School have been involved in the sustainable projects. The Insect Lodge will be used as an educational resource for the local schools.
Nestlé’s Wyeth’s sustainable strategy seeks to reduce its environmental footprint through reduced waste and water and energy use, and by enhancing local biodiversity.
