Institute of Directors appoints new chief executive

The Institute of Directors in Ireland (IoD) has appointed Caroline Spillane to succeed Maura Quinn as chief executive in July.

Spillane, a chartered accountant, will join IoD from her position as director general of Engineers Ireland.

"We are delighted to have a person of Caroline’s calibre join us as CEO," said Imelda Reynolds, IoD president. "Caroline is an accomplished leader who has wide expertise in strategic planning and delivery of results.  

"She is well positioned to further build the IoD and to bring the Institute forward for the benefit of our members and business leaders in Ireland.”

IoD operating company The Institute of Directors in Ireland had revenue of €3.2m in 2020, made up of €2.8m income from director development and training programmes, and €890,000 in membership subscriptions. The latter income line was down 14% on the previous year.

In 2020, the IoD chief executive enjoyed a remuneration package of €260,000, made up of €193,000 salary, €19,000 pension payment, €31,000 bonus and €18,000 BIK.

Average pay for 2 other IoD staff was €68,000, plus c.€6,000 pension payment per employee.

Spillane said IoD is well placed for future growth. She holds a BA from UCC, an MA from TU Dublin, and is currently studying for a Doctorate in Business Administration from Waterford IT.

Maura Quinn, who was CEO for 14 years, is stepping down to pursue other opportunities.
