Dutch online share trading platform Degiro has added a portfolio of ETFs to its offering. Clients can choose from a list of more than 700 exchange traded funds, and Degiro says it is the only broker in Ireland that offers this to clients.

Degiro director Gijs Nagel (pictured) said: “ETF investors will be able to purchase once a month for free, and can then increase their holding in that ETF for free provided that the order is a minimum of €/$/£1,000, depending upon the currency which the ETF is traded in. In the following month, if they want to sell it will also be free.

“This initiative has been envisioned so that small savers will have the chance to invest small amounts monthly without being penalised by transaction costs," said Nagel. "For example, investors can now buy Vanguard's ETF, which replicates the S&P 500, with their monthly savings. This move will also encourage more investors to make use of ETFs, which can be used to tool to build a more diversified portfolio.”

Degiro, which is active in 17 countries, claims that in excess of 100,000 clients use the platform, processing transactions worth in excess of €30 billion on stock exchanges worldwide. The company claims that Irish investors can save on average 90% in share trading commissions on the Degiro platform.
