Design Week Ireland has announced Canadian designer and educator Bruce Mau as its keynote speaker for the week-long national programme of events starting 14 November.

Mau is the CEO of Chicago-based design consultancy Massive Change Network, which he co-founded in 2010 with his wife Aiyemobisi ‘Bisi’ Williams.

Running from the 14th to the 18th of November, Design Week is being curated by the Design & Crafts Council Ireland and funded by the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment.

DCCI said the event will serve to highlight issues surrounding diversity, sustainability, and inclusion, while also showcasing how design contributes to our economy and society.

Mau will speak in a keynote presentation on the opening night on how life-centred design, which takes environmental and social implications into account, can provide innovative solutions while also advancing change.

He will focus on affordable housing and healthcare, sustainability and climate, as well as social equality, while also detailing how design processes can create a brighter future for Ireland.

“Ireland has experienced immense change in a very short period of time, challenging old norms, attitudes and economics. The systems we exist within and the lives we lead are designed - so they can be re-designed,” said Mau.

The first event of Design Week 2022 takes place at the National Gallery in Dublin on Monday morning and will hear Aiyemobisi ‘Bisi’ Williams lead a discussion chaired by Patricia MacBride with Noelle O’Connell, Cllr.
