Although it’s relatively unknown in Ireland, over 50 million people in 84 nations participate in dragon boat racing every year and this September the ancient Chinese sport again comes to Dublin, giving Irish people the chance to experience the excitement of a sport which dates back over 2,000 years.

The Hong Kong Dublin Dragon Boat Regatta takes place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September next in  Grand Canal Dock.

Races at the regatta will be run over 200 metre and 400 metre distances. Categories include under-18s and the Novice Challenge, where teams can choose to raise funds for a chosen charity or even turn up in fancy dress — there’s a prize for the wackiest team outfit. Paddlers from Canada, Germany and the USA have already registered to compete in the highly competitive international category.

Julie Doyle of the Irish Dragon Boat Association said: “Dragon boat racing is such a sociable sport and it’s great fun. No experience is required and the regatta welcomes people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels. It’s no surprise, therefore, that in previous years the regatta has been a popular team-building experience for companies and organisations of all sizes.”

Entries close on 26 August, but as registration is on a first come, first served basis, teams are advised to secure their place as quickly as possible.

This year, the Dublin Dragon Boat Regatta is sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. Based in Brussels, the office is the official representation of the Hong Kong Government to the European Union and EU states, including Ireland.

Drew Lai of the Trade Office said: “Our mission is to promote ties between Hong Kong and Europe, particularly on economics, trade, cultural matters, etc. We are therefore proud to be the title sponsor of the event this year. Dragon boat is a very popular team sport in Hong Kong and we’re delighted to encourage its growth in Ireland.”

Dragon boat teams for the regatta will consist of 16 to 20 people, along with a drummer. Each team will be supplied with paddles, buoyancy aids, and an experienced helmsperson. Entry fees per team cost €425 (adults) or €255 (under 18s). Proceeds from the event will go towards Plurabelle Paddlers and to the development of dragon boat racing in Ireland.

Crew Class and Rowing Ireland are hosting the inaugural  Crew Class Dockland Regatta  at Hannover Quay on August 30. Participants can learn to row  in 30 minute lessons that cost €75 per crew member for a crew of four.
