Advertising agency Talon Ireland is set to run an awareness campaign to highlight the out of home (OOH) advertising industry's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint to mark Earth Day on Friday April 22.
The specialist OOH company has produced a content series to create awareness of the steps taken by the industry to lower emissions, with Talon choosing to collaborate with media partners and printers that have proven green credentials to offer more sustainable solutions and create cleaner supply chains.
"Talon Ireland is incredibly proud of the steps that the Irish out of home industry is undertaking to play our part in bringing sustainable solutions to our clients," said Ciara Gibney, marketing manager at Talon Ireland.
"We are delighted to recognise Earth Day, but strongly believe that whilst it is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the environmental issues our generation is currently facing, being sustainable is something that we should be focused on every day, not just every year.
“The growing importance of sustainability has been one of the key market trends over the last few years, with appetite increasing amongst clients for creative solutions that give back to the environment.
"Most recently, Volkswagen and BBDO Dublin hand drew an entire billboard with a pencil to illustrate their 'Way to Zero' vision. We understand that there is a lot more work to do but these are small steps towards the common goal of making outdoor advertising greener.”
Talon's collaborators include McGowan Digital Print, which is a member of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
As an FSC member, all McGowan paper is made from sustainably-sourced materials and has an audited trail from source to delivery. It has also moved to water-based inks, and uses renewable energy, and carbon paper complete the circle of recycling.
Similarly, Horizon Digital Print Solutions uses water-based ink, printing, and recycling waste material, as well as a fully electric vehicle fleet, and its tree planting initiative with DSPCA has seen 70 native trees planted at the animal welfare charity's Rathfarnham site.
Other printers such as Alexander Boyd Displays and P&D are also FSC Certified, in a continued effort by the industry to promote more environmentally friendly options.
In addition to Dublin and Belfast, Talon has offices in London, Manchester, New York and San Diego, plus several other US cities, and its OOH planning and buying network covers 75 markets.
