Fugitive former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden made his Twitter debut Tuesday with one question:
Can you hear me now?

Snowden, who fled the US in 2013 after leaking information about government surveillance programs, has rounded up nearly one million followers in his first 24 hours on Twitter. But he only follows one account: the NSA's.
From exile in Russia, Snowden has so far used Twitter to crack a few jokes and grant a mini interview to astrophysicist and radio show host Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Feeling a Geek vibe. Edward @Snowden, the man behind the global mass surveillance revelations. Welcome to @twitter. — Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) September 29, 2015
.@neiltyson Thanks for the welcome. And now we've got water on Mars! Do you think they check passports at the border? Asking for a friend.

Snowden's proponents believe he heroically exposed government wrongdoing, whereas opponents — including the US government — think his leaking intelligence information rightfully earned the espionage charges filed against him. Through his account, Snowden's followers can now get a glimpse of how he views himself.
.@neiltyson Hero, traitor -- I'm just a citizen with a voice. [1/2] — Edward Snowden (@Snowden) September 29, 2015
Snowden, who now works as the director at Freedom of the Press Foundation, described himself in his Twitter bio: "I used to work for the government. Now I work for the public."
But one thing apparently hasn't changed: Snowden's goal to keep people on their toes.
Meanwhile, a thousand people at Fort Meade just opened Twitter.
