Courier company GLS has opened a new depot in Cork which triples its capacity in the region.
The new depot is located at Blarney Business Park, 16 kilometres from the previous location in Little Island and centrally positioned with access to all major roads.
Managing director Andreas Rickert said: “The Cork depot strengthens our network for the long term. We expect rising parcel numbers, and the increased capacity allows us to sustainably offer our customers a high quality level.
“The first customers based in Blarney Business Park have signed up already with GLS to ship their goods across Ireland and Europe. This underlines our decision to relocate and enlarge our footprint in Cork.”
The warehouse is 240% cent bigger than the old depot in Little Island, with a new conveyor system bringing a faster, more efficient process so that three times as many parcels can now be processed.
Sustainability was also important in the design of the building, and the latest construction standards were met, including the use of LED lighting and excellent insulation to reduce electricity consumption and effects on the environment.
GLS Ireland is a subsidiary of Amsterdam-based General Logistics Systems, which operates in 41 European countries and in the US and Canada. It posted revenues of €2.9 billion in 2017-2018 and carried 584 million packages.
