GoMo, the virtual mobile service provider operating on the Eir network, has launched its GoMoWorld app for roaming in 160 countries.
The company claims customers travelling abroad can use the app, in combination with the virtual eSIM that comes with many smartphones, to connect to the 'best available networks' and avoid unexpected roaming charges.
Users download the app to activate their eSIM and select their planned destination before pre-purchasing their data roaming allowance.
Prices start from €4 for 2GB of data in the EU and Australia. GoMoWorld updates customers on their data usage, and the app also sends notifications before users hit their data caps.
Standard plans cost €20 for 20GB of data in the EU and Australia, 10GB in the US, and 5GB in Canada.
EU citizens travelling to other member states are charged for calls, texts and data usage at the same rates as they would under their mobile plan at home. The European Commission extended the Roam-like-at-home regulation to 2032 last July.
The regulation also set wholesale caps on mobile data, starting at €2 per GB in 2022 and falling to €1.10 by 2026. Wholesale caps will fall from €0.022 to €0.019 per minute for voice calls and from €0.004 to €0.003 for SMS from 2025.
“We all know the stress of landing in a new country after a long flight and worrying about finding your transfer, your accommodation, and having no mobile connection GoMoWorld was created to put an end to that stress," said Heloise Abraham, director of GoMoWorld.
"GoMoWorld has been created by telecommunications experts, and by leveraging the expertise of our European wide partners we were able to build something truly unique, and truly customer centric."
Eir has c.1.2m mobile customers in Ireland, including 850,000 on bill pay plans and 342,000 on pay-as-you-go deals.
GoMo hit 300,000 customers in October 2021, two years after launching a lifetime offer of unlimited calls and texts and 80GB of data from €10 per month. The price then rose to €13 and then €15.
