Guinness has been awarded the Red Dot Award for Product Design for its Nitrosurge and Microdraught dispensers.

Microdraught is a world-first beer dispense system which enables pubs, bars and other outlets around the world to serve Guinness Draught on tap no matter their size or setup.

The patent-pending technology uses double coaxial piercing of a unique, specially designed can, which is filled with the same Guinness that is kegged in St James’s Gate and poured in pubs around the world.

The concept was to miniaturize the dispense process to just two elements: a pint-sized beer keg and a compact, counter-top dispense device. Unlike traditional systems, MicroDraught uses a single-serve keg which provides brewery-fresh beer every time while eliminating the need for traditional complex gas storage systems.

The product is 'plug and play' and the user inserts a chilled can and is guided through the Guinness pour using an intuitive digital interface.

A cradle slowly tilts the glass to the perfect angle, while on-board sensors ensure the temperature, pressure and pour speed are managed to create a consistent serve every time.

Microdraught uses an air pump - as opposed to the gas cylinder used in the traditional system - to push the liquid out of the can and through the standard Guinness Draught spout. The result is a two-part pour with the surge and settle familiar to Guinness drinkers.

Guinness said that Microdraught dispense technology is the biggest technological leap for Guinness since the advent of the widget in 1988. The brewer says that Microdraught means the beer can be offered in draught form in an estimated 12,000 around the world where kegs and taps are not viable.

Nitrosurge puts the iconic two-part pour in the hands of consumers, with a pocket-sized, rechargeable device that uses ultrasonic technology to give drinkers a two-part pour.

Nitrogen bubbles create the surge and flavour of Guinness for every pour. The ergonomics, strength and frequency of pulsing and flow patterns work exclusively with the brand’s Nitrosurge cans.
