Halloween consumer spending exceeds pre-Covid levels

Adults in Ireland will spend €71.5m on Halloween this year, an increase of €22.5m compared to pre-Covid levels, according to iReach Insights.

A survey of 1,000 people show that around half of adults will spend less than €50 on Halloween between sweets, costumes, decorations, etc, and the average spend amounts to €50.85.

The surge in spending correlates to a 25% increase in the number of people who will celebrate Halloween this year (63%) compared to pre-Covid levels.

More than a third (37%) of respondents plan to watch a horror or scary movie while 22% will dress up and go to a party, and 18% will celebrate by going to the pub.

A further quarter (27%) of adults do not have any plans at present, and 48% will not decorate their house this year for Halloween compared to 19% that will.

Of those staying in on Halloween night, 42% are happy to give gifts to callers, 23% will stay in for a little while for early callers, and 20% will stay in with lights off and hope no one calls.

This year 47% of adults will be dressing up for Halloween, which is an increase of 15% compared to pre-Covid levels.

Some 8% of adults will dress up as a witch for Halloween, 6% will dress as a movie character, and 6% will dress up as a ghost.
