Holyhead Port could be closed until March due to the scale of its storm damage, it has been suggested, writes Helen Bruce.
The Terminal 3 berth at the port, used by Irish Ferries, was damaged during Storm Darragh earlier this month, with a knock-on impact on the adjoining terminal used by Stena Line.
It meant the port could not be used over the Christmas period, causing chaos for delivery drivers and holiday passengers alike, on both sides of the Irish Sea.
Both ferry companies have cancelled sailings until January 15, rerouting passengers where possible or offering refunds.
However, Garrett Bridgeman, managing director of An Post, has now revealed that he does not believe that the port will reopen for months.
“I don’t think January 15 looks like the date.
“If you look at the level of work that needs to be done and there may be a need for safety checks afterwards,” he told the Sunday Times.
“I can’t see it opening until February or into March.
“The damage was underwater, and it was very significant.”

Holyhead Port stated: “Holyhead Port can confirm that the ferry berths in the port will remain closed until the 15th of January.
“The safety of all persons involved in the berthing arrangements; including our staff, contractors and of course our customers is our number one priority, and we will only permit ferry services to recommence once we are sure it is safe to do so.”
