Ibec has updated its online Tariff Hub following the agreement of the EU-US trade deal over the weekend.

The hub has been furnished with the employers group's latest preliminary analysis and a webinar for members, talking them through the permutations of the blanket 15 per cent of EU goods entering the US.

The hub also features an FAQ page answering common questions from businesses about tariffs such as how they are calculated and applied, rules of origin, why services are not subjected to tariffs, etc.

In an introduction to the hub, Ibec chief executive Danny McCoy said the deal brings "an end to a significant amount of uncertainty for some businesses," but that the 15 per cent tariffs "represent a substantial burden for many industries".

"Sectors which rely heavily on the US market and operate within small margins, will once again be significantly impacted by an additional five per cent tariff, on top of what they have already had to absorb over the past several months and well in excess of the one per cent effective tariff which existed before April.

"Our message to the government, as it was with the 10% tariff, is that the most exposed sectors will require support similar to the interventions provided as a response to Brexit."

Taoiseach Micheál Martin on Monday ruled out Brexit-style supports for business, saying: “This is not Brexit, and I would caution in terms of just creating funds in themselves".
