It has been a great year for Irish sport, with the men's rugby team completing a historic series victory over the All Blacks in New Zealand, the women's soccer team qualifying for the World Cup and a number of memorable individual performances.

The women's team earned some significant sponsorship revenue for the FAI in booking their place in Australia and New Zealand next summer, and Katie Taylor is now earning seven-figure paydays for her title defences.

The list of Ireland's richest sportspeople is dominated by men, however, with legends of golf and soccer dominating the top-end of Irish sporting wealth.

1. Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor's days as an elite MMA fighter look to be behind him, having fallen out of the US anti-doping pool following a number of comprehensive losses and his lucrative detour into boxing.

The Crumlin fighter, 34, is believed to be worth around $190m after becoming the biggest name in the UFC when its popularity exploded in the mid-2010s and leveraging his success into several licensing ventures. Forbes puts his annual earnings at $43m.

2. Rory McIlroy

After a few up-and-down years, Rory McIlroy is back on top of the golf world, sitting pretty at number one in the rankings, although his wait for another major title is now in its ninth year.

McIlroy, 33, is worth an estimated €160-190m, and Forbes has reported that the Co Down man has annual earnings of $41.5 (€39.7m). He won $8.7m on the PGA Tour in 2022.

3. Eddie Irvine

Former Formula 1 driver Eddie Irvine was a nine-year veteran of the circuit, driving for the Ferrari and the now-defunct Jordan team before finishing his career with Jaguar in 2002.

He has since dabbled in film, TV, and radio, but he had accumulated wealth from property investment prior to his motor racing career. He is worth an estimated €115m.

4. Roy Keane

More than 15 years after retiring from soccer, Roy Keane continues to be a major presence in the game as a pundit for Sky Sports and ITV following a spell as Ireland assistant manager under Martin O'Neill.

The outspoken Corkman, 51, is a seven-time Premier League winner and a Champions League winner, and his exit from the Ireland squad ahead of the 2002 World Cup remains a national talking point. He is worth an estimated €57m.

5. Robbie Keane

Ireland's record goalscorer Robbie Keane was a Premier League mainstay with Leeds, Tottenham, and Liverpool, with stints at Inter Milan, Celtic and LA Galaxy too, coming of age at a time when television money rapidly inflated player wages.

Keane, 42, is also Ireland's most capped player, playing 146 matches and scoring 68 goals for his country, while also playing in a World Cup and two European Championships. He is worth an estimated $55m.

6. Padraig Harrington

Before McIlroy's ascendancy, Padraig Harrington was the leading light of Irish golf, winning three majors between 2007 and 2008 and playing for Europe at the Ryder Cup six times from 1999-2010.

The Dubliner, 51, has since joined the seniors tour, winning his first major at the US Senior Open this year. He is worth an estimated €38.2m.

7. Graeme McDowell

Graeme McDowell attracted the golfing world's ire this year in joining the Saudi-backed LIV Tour, prompting accusations of sports washing from the media and fellow golfers uncomfortable with supporting Mohammed bin Salman's regime.

The Co Antrim golfer, 43, won the US Open in 2010 but had slipped down the rankings in recent years before joining the breakaway golf league. He is worth an estimated $40m.

=8. Damien Duff

Another legend of the Irish 2002 World Cup team, Damien Duff played for Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle, Fulham and won the Premier League twice with Chelsea during his storied, 19-year career.

Now managing SSE Airtricity League Premier Division side and losing FAI Cup finalists Shelbourne, Duff is worth an estimated €28.7m.

=8. AP McCoy

20-time champion jockey AP McCoy rode 4,358 winners and won the Grand National, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and the Irish Grand National in his career. He is married to Chanelle McCoy, whose family own Randox, a leading supplier of Covid tests.

McCory retired in 2015 and he has since moved into punditry. He is estimated to be worth €28.7m.

10. Shane Lowry

Offaly golfer Shane Lowry this year came third at the Masters and won the PGA Championship, his first tournament victory since winning the Open at Royal Portrush in 2019.

Lowry, 35, also minted a partnership with e-commerce finance unicorn Wayflyer this year. He is estimated to be worth €22m.
