Lufthansa Technik opens engine repair facility in Celbridge

Lufthansa Technik Turbine Shannon (LTTS), the Lufthansa Technik-owned aircraft repair and maintenance business, has opened a new €28m mobile engine services facility in Celbridge, Co Kildare.

The site will service and repair engines for airline and aviation leasing companies from Ireland and across the EMEA region, employing 30 highly skilled personnel, with plans to increase headcount to 65 over the next two years as business grows.

The 3,500 sq m facility will also host a technical team that can be deployed worldwide to carry out necessary work for customers. The project is supported by the government through IDA Ireland.

"The aviation industry is rebuilding at pace following the significant impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the sector, and our business is focused on supporting our customers by growing our own capabilities and product offering," said Michael Malewski, CEO of LTTS. 

"Today’s announcement is good news for the aviation sector and good news for Ireland, as we actively look to invest in and expand our operation with more recruitment underway for both technical and administrative staff.”

LTTS already employs 252 people in Shannon, and a further 24 technical support personnel at its offices in Dublin.

The launch of the Celbridge site increases LTTS's engine bay capacity to 10 while enhancing the companies capabilities and customer facilities.

The firm has another EMEA mobile engine services hub in Frankfurt, but Kildare facility is able to provide maintenance for newer engine types. Lufthansa Technik also has mobile engine services stations in Montreal; Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Shenzhen, China.

LTTS said the Celbridge facility would undergo continuous development, backed by a multi-million euro investment as market demand grows.

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar said the opening was "significant and very welcome," particularly given the the effects of the pandemic on the aviation sector.

Mary Buckley, interim CEO of IDA Ireland, said: "Today’s announcement by LTTS to open this new multimillion euro facility in Celbridge is very good news indeed.

"The decision demonstrates the company’s confidence in the availability of a skilled and talented workforce in the region. IDA Ireland remains committed to winning jobs and investment in regional locations. I wish LTTS continued success."

Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment Dara Calleary said the investment highlighted the importance of Ireland's EU membership and geographic location, and that the investment would provide additional skilled jobs in the region.
