'Stepping on Up', a team from Chill Insurance, has won the Mazars Steps Team Challenge, which involved competitors completing a virtual route around the circumference of Ireland.
The Chill quartet - Ross Whyte, Paul Sunderland, Kenneth Byrne and Kenneth Daly - came first out of 711 teams, completing 4,314,000 steps overall and averaging 38,500 per team member each day.
The accountancy firm worked out that this equates to 3,068 kilometres during the four-week virtual walking challenge – the same as two loops of the virtual route around Ireland.
The virtual walking challenge received team entries from Ireland and across the globe, with teams of four completing 755 million steps and 526,000 kilometres during the four-week virtual walking challenge.
Teams completed a virtual route around the circumference of Ireland, starting and ending in Dublin and taking in landmarks such as Giants Causeway, Croagh Patrick and Killarney national park along the way.
An app tracked their real steps throughout their day. In another calculation, Mazars figures that combined, the teams walked to the moon and almost back to earth.
The Chill team’s prize is premium Six Nations match tickets for Ireland v England.
Mazars also will make a donation to their chosen charities, Feileacain, Wexford SPCA, Irish Cancer Society, and Mental Health Ireland.
Everyone who completed the route was entered into a prize draw for a stay on the Marker Hotel and dinner in the Brasserie restaurant in Dublin. The prize was won by Jigsaw Wicklow.
Mazars managing partner Tom O'Brien commented: “We were delighted with the response and amazed at the number of steps completed across the four weeks.
“The number of teams entered, combined with the incredible distances covered, indicate the competitiveness and dedication of all who took part.
“Most importantly, the event is a fun and positive way to start the year, and one which we look forward to further growing in the coming years."
