The Mercantile Hotel & Bar on Dame Street in Dublin city centre will reopen in May following an extensive renovation.

The hotel will feature an additional 77 bedrooms, bringing the total number of rooms available to 105.

The reopening will create 80 new hospitality jobs, including accommodation manager, chefs, food & beverage manager, and front office manager.

The restaurant will have a menu curated by head chef Stephen Gibson, formerly of Café en Seine and founder of the French restaurant Pichet, both run by the Mercantile Group.

Gibson has worked abroad in France, London and Sydney during his more than 30-year career. The hotel will also feature a new bar and café known as Café28.

Business Bulletin

“It’s a great pleasure to announce the relaunch of The Mercantile Hotel, Bar and Restaurant on Dame Street in Dublin. It has been five years since we closed the hotel for renovations, so we are very excited to be opening its doors in May," said David Murray, managing director of the Mercantile Group.

"We have significantly increased the number of hotel bedrooms by 275%, in addition to adding a new rear extension and an additional floor, which will enhance our guest’s experience."

The Mercantile first opened in 1835 and has undergone a significant conservation and redevelopment to preserve its architectural heritage, which can been seen in the refurbishment of the original facades, the restoration of the sash windows and the removal of modern alterations.

The new design is described as Georgian elegance meets contemporary Dublin and draws inspiration from 19th century commerce and exploration.

“Throughout the construction and refurbishment process it was very important to us that it held its unique Georgian and Dublin charm, while bringing a new modern feel and style that local and international guests will very much appreciate," said Murray.

" It will ensure that a well-loved landmark, which celebrates its 190 years this year, is preserved for generations to come.

"Our team and our partners have worked extremely hard, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming guests to experience and stay in the hotel in the heart of Dublin when we officially reopen our doors in May.”

The Mercantile Group was assisted on the refurbishment by Adston Construction, Michael Fitzpatrick Architects and Millimetre Design.
