Energy company Pinergy has announced it is increasing the amount that it pays to customers who sell excess electricity back to the grid.

Under the clean export guarantee, customers were initially paid 13.5 cent per kWh of electricity that was sold back to Pinergy. However, following significant rises in wholesale energy prices, the company is increasing this tariff to 21 cent per kWh - a 64% rise.

The CEG tariff was established in February by the Commission for Regulation and Utilities, and aims to provide remuneration to micro and small-scale generators of renewable energy in Ireland. Pinergy was among the first energy companies to sign up to the framework.

Pinergy also announced that they have begun paying customers for the energy exported already this year, with this payment being backdated to when the framework was announced in February. The 21 cent payment is also the highest CEG tariff amongst energy companies to date.

Speaking on the announcement, Pinergy CEO Enda Gunnell said: “We already have several hundred customers that are on Pinergy supply who are exporting their excess energy having been approved for the Micro-generation scheme.
