Smartfrog Sitting Pretty In Home Camera Market

You’d think that the market for smart home security cameras is exhausted by now, but Smartfrog is proving you wrong. The Dublin-headquartered startup has raised over $10m so far for its version of the technology, helped by former Clevercards senior executive John Fitzgerald, who is now Smartfrog’s CFO.

Jumping into a market with the likes of Dropcam (owned by Nest, which is owned by Google), Simplicam, Canary and many others, Smartfrog’s USP is simplicity. Users download an app, connect Smartfrog Cam to their WiFi and can then monitor their homes or offices from afar. The app can be used on a smartphone, laptop or tablet, with both Apple and Android devices catered for.

Motion Sensor

The camera itself is small, measuring 11cm by 7.6cm, and comes with an 8x zoom function. It also has an integrated motion sensor, which will watch an area then alter users through the smartphone app if movement is detected. Other features include a speaker and microphone, so you can startle any uninvited guests.

Smartfrog says that users can connect multiple cameras to the smartphone app and the camera’s picture quality is 720p HD, with good night vision capabilities too. It doesn’t use a battery though, so you need to plug the camera in.

The camera can be bought for €149 without a subscription, which gives users a four-hour, cloud-stored footage history and live video feed. Otherwise, for a €6 per month subscription, you get 24-hour video history and live feed. You can also pay extra to get up to 30 days of footage recorded and stored for you.

Smartfrog was founded in 2015 and is growing fast. The firm employs around 50 people in offices in Dublin, Switzerland, Germany and China, with expansion to the UK and US next on the cards. Users have thus far been signed up from more than 65 countries.
