Homeowners considering getting solar panels have been warned a grant to help install them is set to be cut from New Year's Day.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) grant, which is designed to support the installation of solar panels, will drop by €300 from €2,100 to €1,800.

The grant can be applied for through the government-funded Solar PV Scheme. It is open to homeowners, including private landlords, but works must be completed within eight months of grant approval.

In order to qualify for the existing funding amounts available, it is vital to submit a completed application through the SEAI website, ahead of the New Year’s Eve deadline.

John O’Keeffe, CEO of ePower, said: "Christmas is a busy time of year so it’s easy to put an application form on the long finger, but we would strongly encourage anyone interested in getting solar panels in the first eight months of 2025 to make the most of the available supports.

"While solar panels’ long-term benefits and savings ultimately outweigh the upfront costs, it’s definitely worth going through the application process while the current grant offering is on the table.”

According to the Irish Solar Energy Association (ISEA) Scale of Solar 2024 Report, the number of homes in Ireland equipped with solar panels in 2024 had exceeded 94,000 by the time of publication, an increase from under 60,000 in the previous year.

John O’Keeffe, CEO ePower, says anyone considering getting solar panels in 2025 should get an application in now

The report estimates that there is an average of 65 installations on homes in Ireland per day, which it says highlights the ‘remarkable growth of residential solar adoption across the country.’

All details on how to apply for the grant are available on the SEAI website, seai.ie.
