Sony Mobile Communications has unveiled SmartBand 2, a ‘lifelogger’ that records heart rate and pulse and provides insights into your fitness, stress and well-being.
The device monitors heart rate and pulse through its accelerometer and heart rate sensor. It also tracks exercise such as walking and running and can serve as motivational tool for fitness.
Another feature of SmartBand 2 is that it analyses sleep patterns, detecting when you sleep, and has an alarm system that Sony claims will wake you at the optimum time in your sleep cycle.
The device also uses heart rate variability to track an individual’s levels of stress and excitement throughout the day.
Sony’s Kaz Tajima, head of creative design, said: “We set out to create the most advanced wearable at this section of the market. SmartBand 2 has the capability to deliver, and make biometric data meaningful for users within Lifelog”
For SmartBand users who own an Xperia phone or tablet, the SmartBand 2 will vibrate when they are more than 10 metres from the device.
Sony claims the SmartBand 2 is water resistant in fresh water, with a silicone casing providing protection. Battery life is said to last up to two days in normal mode, but when the heart rate sensors are on this is reduced to 10 hours.
Designed in Japan and Sweden, the SmartBand 2 will be available in black and white, with pink and indigo versions released at a later date. The device launches in September and is expected to be priced around €119.
